Best Time to Visit Siskiyou County: A Local’s Guide by Season
Siskiyou County in far Northern California has four real seasons, and they’re all very different.
The best time to visit Siskiyou County for most people is June through October, when the weather is nicest, trails and roads are open, and there are plenty of events, lakes, and outdoor activities to enjoy.
If you’re hoping for waterfalls and fewer crowds, spring is a great choice. If you want fall color, harvest season, and quieter small towns, come in September or October.
And, of course, if you love snow, winter is the best time to visit.
I grew up in Siskiyou County and have been through every season here. There really isn’t a bad time to come, but there is a best time depending on what you want to do.
This guide breaks down what each season is like so you can decide when to visit Siskiyou County based on the kind of trip you want.
What to Know Before You Pick a Season
Siskiyou County covers a lot of ground, and elevation makes a big difference. Mount Shasta can have snow into May (and even June), while Yreka might be sunny and dry.
Some trails and roads close in winter, especially higher up. Summers can get hot in the valley, but are cooler in the mountains.
No matter when you visit, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Siskiyou County, from outdoor adventures to small-town events.
Spring in Siskiyou County (March to May)

Monthly Highlights:
- March: Early wildflowers and cold mornings; lower elevation hikes start to open.
- April: Waterfalls are full and trails begin to clear; good time for nature photography.
- May: Warmer days and local events start; trout fishing and camping get going.
Spring is tricky in Siskiyou County. We’ll get some nice days mixed with cold days and snow in higher elevations. Often it feels like we’re skipping straight from winter into summer.
It’s not as busy as summer, which makes it a great time to explore without crowds. Hedge Creek Falls and Faery Falls are especially good in spring because of the snowmelt.
Local events start in May, like plant sales and farmers’ markets. Trout season opens in late April, and a lot of locals get out on the rivers around then.
If you’re bringing your dog, spring is also a great time to check out some of the dog-friendly parks in Siskiyou County.
You’ll want to dress in layers. Nights are still cold, but afternoons can get warm. And be prepared for rain and even snow.
Summer in Siskiyou County (June to August)

Monthly Highlights:
- June: Start of summer festivals and perfect hiking weather in the mountains.
- July: Hot days and clear skies; great for swimming, hiking, and fireworks.
- August: More festivals and berry season; can be smoky some years depending on fires.
This is the busiest time of year. Most of the trails are open, lakes are warm enough to swim, and there’s something going on in town almost every weekend.
This is the time for hiking Castle Lake, swimming in Lake Siskiyou, or checking out events like Golden City Days and the county fair.
It can get hot in the lower areas like Yreka and Montague, but places like Mount Shasta and McCloud stay cooler. Plan for cool nights all over the county.
Summer is great for families and for people who want to pack in a lot, especially if you like outdoor adventures.
There are plenty of options when it comes to where to stay. Campgrounds and hotels fill up quickly, though, especially around holidays.
Just be warned that we can get smoke from wildfires in the summer. There are years when all the ash in the air looks like it’s snowing. If you’re coming for a particular event in the summer, make sure it’s not affected by the fires.
Fall in Siskiyou County (September to November)

Monthly Highlights:
- September: Warm days and cooler nights; early fall color and fewer crowds.
- October: Peak fall color and harvest season; great for drives and outdoor photos.
- November: Colder weather and early snow in the mountains; things start to slow down.
Fall is quieter and, honestly, one of the best times to visit. The weather usually holds through October, and the trees in Scott Valley and along the mountain roads put on a pretty good color show.
This is also the time for apple picking, pumpkin patches, and maybe a local cider stand. Farmers’ markets usually run into mid or late October.
By November, things start to wind down. It gets colder, and you might see snow in the higher elevations. Some seasonal businesses close for the winter, so check ahead if there’s something specific you want to visit.
Winter in Siskiyou County (December to February)

Monthly Highlights:
- December: Ski season starts and towns feel festive; good for snow and holiday vibes.
- January: Cold and quiet with consistent snow in higher elevations.
- February: A calm, snowy month that’s great for cabin stays and snowshoeing.
Winter in Siskiyou County means snow in the mountains and fewer people around. If you ski, snowboard, or snowshoe, you’ll find good options around Mount Shasta and McCloud.
Even if you’re not into snow sports, it’s a good time to visit if you want a quiet cabin, snowy scenery, and a slower pace.
I-5 sometimes closes during storms. If you’re driving in winter, carry chains, blankets, water, and snacks just in case.
Pro Tip #1: Many major auto parts stores will let you return unused tire chains. So pick up a set before your trip. As long as they are unopened and you have the receipt, you can take them back when you get home. Of course, check the store’s return policy first.
Pro Tip #2: Carry cash when driving in Siskiyou County in the winter. If chains are required, there will be people willing to put them on for you. It’s worth the $40 – $50. (I’m not exactly sure what the going rate is these days. My policy is to stay home until the snow melts.)
When You Might Want to Skip It
Sometimes late summer brings wildfire smoke. August and early September are the most likely times for that. It depends on the year, although lately it seems to be an annual thing. If you’re planning to hike or camp, check the air quality before you come.
If you’re not a fan of cold, stay away in the winter. We may not get as cold as a lot of the country, but we can have days in the teens and even single digits. Last winter, the emergency brake on my car froze while I was out getting a new battery. I didn’t even know that was possible.

Final Thoughts
So, when is the best season to come to Siskiyou County? It depends on what you’re looking for.
Spring has waterfalls and fewer people.
Summer is great for hiking, swimming, and local events.
Fall brings cooler temperatures, fall color, and harvest activities.
Winter is best for snow, quiet cabins, and skiing.
Siskiyou County is known for its year-round outdoor adventures. No matter when you visit, there’s always something to do. Just pack for wild weather and get ready to enjoy nature at its finest.
